Amber Heard, who was previously married to Johnny Depp, published an opinion piece in The Washington Post in 2018 in which she implied that Depp was abusive to their children but did not name him specifically. In response, Depp filed a lawsuit against Heard for defamation.
Amber Heard, age 36, and Johnny Depp, age 59, have finally reached a settlement in the defamation case that they were involved in. This comes after Amber attempted to appeal the judgement that was handed out in June 2022 in favour of Johnny.
On December 19, Amber posted a message on Instagram in which she explained that, “after a great deal of contemplation, I have made the very painful choice to settle the defamation case brought against me by my ex-husband in Virginia.” Amber’s statement included the following quote: It is crucial for me to declare that I never chose this.
I stood up for what I believed in, and as a result, the life that I had known was obliterated. The shaming I’ve received on social media is a magnified version of the ways in which women are re-victimized when they come out with their experiences.
Amber, who lost the case against Johnny and was ordered to pay her ex-boyfriend $10 million in damages for being found guilty of defaming him in an opinion piece for The Washington Post, explained that her settlement does not change her story. The court found that Amber was guilty of defaming her ex-boyfriend in the article. I have made no admission. This in no way constitutes a compromise on our part. She clarified that there would be no limitations or censorship placed on her ability to speak in the future.
The Aquaman actress also mentioned that she was subjected to a form of humiliation that I simply cannot relive during the trial.She then went on to say that she has resolved the lawsuit because time is valuable and she wants to spend her time constructively and intentionally.
Amber is quoted as saying, “In choosing to settle this case, I am also choosing the freedom to dedicate my time to the work that helped me heal after my divorce. This work is described as existing in realms in which Amber feels seen, heard, and believed, and in which she is confident she can bring about change. I will not allow myself to be intimidated, saddened, or dissuaded from telling the truth by what has taken place. That is something that can’t be and won’t be taken away from me. “My voice will always be the single most significant commodity I own,” she went on to say. Amber finished her speech by expressing gratitude to her legal team as well as to everybody who had supported her throughout the proceedings.
On December 5, Amber submitted a notice of appeal regarding the verdict in the defamation lawsuit. The actress asserted in the documents filed with the court that Johnny’s defamation claims against her ought to have been thrown out prior to the commencement of the trial itself. Even before, Amber’s attorney had said that the client did not have the ten million dollars necessary to make the payment to Johnny.
In an opinion piece that she wrote, Amber discussed how she had been the victim of domestic abuse. She did not identify Johnny by name in the article; however, the Pirates of the Caribbean filed a lawsuit against her for defamation. Following a highly publicized trial in which Johnny received a lot of support from the general public, he emerged victorious.
