Hari Budha Magar, a Nepalese man and former soldier in the Gurkha Brigade who lost both his legs above the knee in a landmine explosion in Afghanistan in 2010, is preparing to achieve his childhood dream of reaching the summit of Mount Everest. His motto is “No Legs, No Limits” as he faces the challenge of climbing the legendary mountain next month.
After years of rehabilitation and training, Hari plans to climb Everest, which he describes as his childhood dream, next month. He has been experimenting with different activities such as parachuting, canoeing, and skiing and has already climbed the Mera Peak in Nepal at an altitude of 6,476 meters and Mont Blanc in France, which is 4,808 meters high. With his specially designed equipment and silicone-covered thighs to protect against frostbite, he is well prepared for the challenge.
Hari Budha Magar faced many obstacles on his journey, including Nepal’s 2017 law banning double amputees and the blind from climbing Everest due to safety concerns, which has since been revoked. He overcame the challenges and is excited to fulfill his dream, which coincides with the coronation of the new King of England, Charles III.
Hari is determined to raise awareness about disabilities and inspire people not to be limited by them. He hopes that his journey will encourage others to adapt their lives and make the most of what they have. His guide, Krishna Thapa, is confident that they will reach the summit, saying that Hari is a great mountaineer who has been preparing for six years and has already broken several records.
