An 18-year-old Peruvian woman has successfully undergone surgery to remove a 20-kilogram, one-meter-tall tumor that was bulging in her abdomen. Initially, the family thought the bulge was due to Andrea Alvarez being overweight, but a medical examination revealed that she actually had a huge tumor that required emergency surgery. The operation lasted more than three hours and was performed on February 23 at the Regional Neoplastic Institute (IREN center) by a specialized medical team.
The doctors involved in the operation explained that the size of the tumor was equivalent to the size of the abdomen of a woman pregnant with twins. After the removal, the giant abdominopelvic tumor with cystic and solid areas was sent to pathological studies for analysis. Dr. Danilo Baltazar, a subspecialist in gynecologic oncology at IREN Centro, reported that the operation was successful and that Andrea was recovering.
IREN Centro has stressed the importance of early detection of this type of tumor, which can go unnoticed at first. In this regard, it is important to be alert to any changes in the body and to consult a physician if in doubt. Andrea’s successful operation shows that, with timely medical intervention, even a large tumor such as the one she had can be overcome.
